Oh That Places That You Can Visit- Kentucky Horse Park

 The Kentucky Horse Park

The most impressive Lexington attraction that you will want to visit during BreyerFest, in my opinion, is the Kentucky Horse Park itself. A lot of people wander around and see some of the attractions, but I and many others will urge you to explore the park as much as you can to see the amazing things that it has to offer.

From museums to real horses, the Kentucky Horse Park offers things for everyone. You can see real horses in action, learn about different breeds, ask as many questions as you can think of, and still see how a working horse farm is ran. Think of the Kentucky Horse Park as one large educational theme park with no rides.

When visiting the Kentucky Horse Park during BreyerFest, your Breyer ticket acts as your admission so you do not need to pay a separate fee. Just make sure that your Admission Wrist Band can be easily seen. I believe that your wrist band will also get you into the American Saddlebred Museum, which is normally a separate ticket, but don’t hold me to it until later after I have concreted that statement.

At the Breeds Barn, you will get to learn about horse breeds that you might not have even heard about before. You will learn a little about the history of the breed, see the horse perform it’s gaits, and learn a little about the horse that is being presented. There are two shows a day at the Breeds Barn and each one focuses on different breeds that are currently stabled in the barn.

At the Hall of Champions, you will get to meet famous race horses, learn about their careers, and what makes them the true Champions that they are today. You can talk to their handlers to learn a little more about the horses and how the act now that they are no longer in the racing circuit and so much more. Make sure to say hello to Point Given! He is my Tiny Human’s favorite Champion there!

The Big Barn is a great place to see Big Horses. The Draft Horses of the Kentucky Horse Park are typically located here in this barn and you can learn more about the Draft Breeds, be inside of one of the largest wooden structures, and get to see even some of the more rare Draft Horses. The show for the Draft Barn is normally a stall side chat as they brush and groom these amazing horses, but you can always just go take a look at them whenever you want during the day. Each horse has their name on their stall and if they are not turned out, you can totally say hi to them. As always, please be careful when petting horses as they can and will nip and bite and definitely do not feed horses.

Next up are the amazing museums and there is definitely more than one here. The first one is the most well known- The International Museum of the Horse. The International Museums of the Horse or the IMH is a Smithsonian Affiliate museum and features some of the comprehensive exhibits from around the world. There are an array of permanent and featured exhibits that will take you on a journey on the roll of horses from their inception until today. Inside of the IMH is the amazing Al-Marah Arabian Horse Galleries. This section is NOT to be missed. From its creation, it has presented the Arabian horse in ways that no one else could. The information is amazing and features Arabian horses from all over the world. The next museum to venture to would be the American Saddlebred museum. The American Saddlebred has a long and colorful history in the Bluegrass and this museum will take you on a journey to see all of that history and so much more. There are new and interactive features to experience this year. And last, but certainly not least is the Wheeler Museum. This museum focuses on show jumping horses and competitions, but you will be able to experience antique equipment, trophies, pictures, and more.

Don’t forget that there are also a lot of Park Memorials and Statues that you will want to visit as well. From Cigar’s resting place to Frisky Filly and The Promise, you can see the resting places of many great horses and also amazing sculptures that capture just how amazing that horses are.

Horse Shows and Equestrian Events are always happening at the Kentucky Horse Park and your BreyerFest admission will allow you to see some of what is going on! During BreyerFest, there will be two Equine Events that are happening during this time: The Lexington Junior League Charity Horse Show and the Champagne Run Horse Trials.
